Jorge Campos ‘’El Brody’’

Jorge Campos Navarrete

Jorge Campos was born on October 15, 1966 in Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico. He played as a goalkeeper in most of his football career, but occasionally played a striker. Jorge Campos was known for going out of the penalty area and eccentric movements in his saves. He had an acrobatic and risky style of play. He was considered one of the best goalkeepers of the his generation. Jorge Campos scored 34 goals in different teams of the American and Mexican League throughout his career.

From Mexico to America

Jorge Campos started his football career at Pumas UNAM. He was a backup goalkeeper in his first season. The coach wanted him to play the striker. Campos, who is now a striker, became the top scorer with 14 goals that season. The following season, he got the goalkeeper position and won the Mexican Primera División with UNAM in the 1990-91 season. Meanwhile he won the 1989 CONCACAF Champions’ Cup. After 7 years in UNAM, he was transferred to Atlante in 1995. He stayed only one season in Atlante. He then transferred to Los Angeles Galaxy for a season and the MLS adventure started.

Until 2004, he ran between the teams of Cruz Azul, Chicago Fire, UNAM, UANL, Atlante, UNAM, Puebla at one-year intervals. He played only two games in Cruz Azul, however won Primera División Invierno in 1997. And secondly, Jorge Campos won the MLS Cup and Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 1998 with Chicago Fire.

Mexican El Brody

Jorge Campos’s national team career began in 1991. He sometimes played a striker in the national team. The first cup he won with his team was CONCACAF Gold Cup in 1993. Moreover, he won this trophy again in 1996. His biggest success in the national team was winning the FIFA Confederations Cup in 1999.

Jorge Campos also participated in these tournaments with the national team; 1995 Copa América (played striker), 1996 Summer Olympics (played striker), 1998 FIFA World Cup, 1999 Copa América, 2002 FIFA World Cup.

Because of the colorful clothes and game style he wore in matches, the Mexicans called him “El Brody”.
