Claudio Taffarel ‘’Atomic Kick’’


Claudio Taffarel, with full name Cláudio André Mergen Taffarel, was born on 8 May 1966 in Brazil. He started his professional career in SC Internacional club in 1985. Atomic Kick, In order for the following years; He played in Parma, Reggiana, Atletico Mineiro, Galatasaray and Parma. Taffarel became legendary in Galatasaray. He played for the Brazilian national team in FIFA 90, 94 and 98.  In 2000, he was named the man of the match in the final match of the UEFA cup.

Club Career

Claudio Taffarel started his goalkeeping career in 1985 at SC Internacional, one of Brazil’s major clubs. After that playing here for five years, the adventure of Italy began. He was first transferred to Parma and then to Reggina. After his adventure in Italy, Taffarel started to rise. He achieved many successes at Atletico Mineiro and Galatasaray. Therefore  after leaving Galatasaray, he transferred to Parma, the last stop of his career.


Claudio Taffarel signaled that he would become a star when he was a goalkeeper in Parma. He won his first cup, the Italian Cup, in the 1991-92 season. Secondly, he won the UEFA trophy next season.

Atletico Mineiro

Taffarel was successful in his country in the following years. At Atletico Mineiro, he won the Campeonato Mineiro Cup first and Copa Conmebol second.


Claudio Taffarel won the most trophies in Galatasaray. The trophies he won for example ; UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, Super League Cup twice in Turkey, Turkey Cup twice. Taffarel preserved Galatasaray fortress for 89 games and he became legend of this team.

Brazil National Team

Atomic Kick played in the 1990, 94 and 98 World Cups. He became the most played goalkeeper in the national team.  The biggest success of Taffarel’s career is winning the FIFA 94 Cup. He played 101 games in the national team. In addition, he won the FIFA 98 second place, Copa America in 1989 and 97, the silver medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics, and the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 1985 with national team.

Claudio Taffarel, Retired

He retired in 2003, two seasons after he transferred to  from Galatasaray to  Parma.
